When Guatemala plays Mexico on Saturday in the nightcap of the opening Gold Cup quarterfinal doubleheader at New Meadowlands Stadium, the Chapines' keeper will be facing a team that scored 14 goals in the first round, twice as many as any other team.
Mexico will be an overwhelming favorite against Guatemala, winning Group A with three wins and outscoring its opponents 14-1. Guatemala didn't score in two of three games and its only victory was a 4-0 win over Grenada.
Guatemala manager Hugo Almeida appears to be unconcerned about Mexico. When asked if a Guatemala win would be a surprise, Almeida reminded reporters about the team's last official meeting. "The last time they played, Guatemala won," he said.
