Defending MLS Cup Champion LA Galaxy finished fourth in the Western Conference with 54 points and consequently won the right to host No. 4 Vancouver in the knockout round on Thursday. The Galaxy won three of their last six matches, concluding the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over No. 3 Seattle Sounders Sunday night, with clutch midfielder Mike Magee scoring the game-winning goal. In that match, head coach Bruce Arena positioned Christian Wilhelmsson Donovan out wide and they battered the Sounders’ strong defense. On the downside, goalkeeper Josh Saunders made some questionable plays in that game.
Los Angeles finished the regular season as the second highest scoring team with 59 goals thanks to the trio of Robbie Keane, Beckham and Donovan, who together produced 32 goals and 31 assists.
The Vancouver Whitecaps are the first Canadian team to ever make the MLS playoffs and snuck into the Western Conference bracket with only 43 points. That’s nine points fewer than Eastern Conference Columbus Crew, who theoretically were eliminated by the playoff conference format. The Whitecaps scored the fewest goals (35) of any playoff contender, but did well for a second-year team.

strong starting performances in Sunday’s match versus Seattle and both are
expected for Thursday. Donovan hadn’t played since October 6 and might need
offseason surgery for a partially torn ligament. Key defender A.J. DeLaGarza is
still sidelined with injury, which is a handicap, and Tommy Meyers is expected
to pair with Omar Gonzalez in central defense.
