Vancouver smells blood after it grabbed the early lead in the series by holding its home ice advantage in Game 1. The Canucks got goals from Henrik Sedin and Kevin Bieksa in a dominant third period to beat the Sharks 3-2. The two days between Games 1 and 2 should benefit the Sharks, who were admittedly gassed in the third period Sunday night. The Sharks have lost seven straight games in the Western Conference Finals dating to 2004.
What the Canucks want to do: 1. Keep the Sedins engaged. Before the series, the talk was that the Thornton-Ryan Kesler matchup would decide the series. Then the Sedins did their thing in Game 1 with Henrik scoring the winner. 2. Continue to play with patience and poise. They are a better team when they don't force anything. There was no panic when Vancouver fell behind in the opener. 3. Play with the same confidence they showed in Game 1.
What the Sharks want to do: 1. Skate with more purpose and energy. 2. Win the one-on-one battles, like they did early in the series against the Detroit Red Wings. 3. Play more physical and get in strong on the Vancouver defense as it tries to move the puck out of the zone.
